Some of our customers have been receiving calls from people claiming to be ‘technicians’ from well-known utilities or telecommunication companies advising that their personal computers are rife with viruses. These ‘technicians’ have then gone on to offer their assistance in eradicating these bugs. If you receive a call like this, hang-up immediately!
These ‘technicians’ are in fact highly-skilled fraudsters. If you stay on the line, they will ask you to download a software program sometimes referred to as ‘TeamViewer’, which will give them access to your personal computer. They will then ask you to login to your internet banking and once you’ve done this, your screen will go completely blank. Behind the scenes, the fraudsters will be setting up a transfer using your money from your accounts, including your credit cards to send one big payment overseas.
Eventually your screen will show the NetGuard page and the fraudsters will ask for your coordinates. Once you’ve entered them, the transfer will be approved and your money will be gone. If you think you’ve been caught up in a scam like this, please call us on 0800 ASK BNZ (275 269) and ask to speak to the Financial Crime Management Centre.
