Just when you think you’ve heard it all!

Did you read the news a few weeks ago? You may have heard that Auckland City Police are looking into a number of incidents where crooks are calling members of the public, masquerading as Police Officers and demanding substantial amounts of money to release family members that they claim to be holding in custody. It has been reported that they are targeting the Indian community.

The sad part is that these offenders are preying on members of this community who may not fully understand New Zealand law or Police practices. These scams are complex and in some instances, victims have been asked to provide iTunes vouchers rather than cash. These calls are not legitimate, and there is no reason for you to believe that they are genuine.

If you receive a call like this, we recommend that you hang up immediately and don’t engage with the caller at all. Please don’t hesitate to call us on 0800 ASK BNZ (275 269) if you have any concerns. For further information click here.

Having lived in foreign countries for extended periods of time I can completely understand why someone would fall for that behavior as there’s a lot of confusion regarding the system, culture, law, etc., especially at the beginning. Hopefully this helps to raise some awareness!
