Here at BNZ, we’re not immune to being impersonated by offenders. We’ve informed you in the past of ‘BNZ phishing emails’ circulating and we’ve also spoken of offenders posing as telecommunications providers. We’d like to let you know that Banks, like us, get impersonated over the telephone too. These callers sound legitimate; claiming to be from the ‘BNZ Investigations Department’ or ‘BNZ Fraud Team’. It’s difficult to tell who is genuine and who isn’t because BNZ may call you sometimes, to confirm a payment, or for other reasons. But there is one big red flag that will confirm it’s not us calling… we will never ask you for your passwords or PINs, by telephone or email, ever. So, if anyone calls you claiming to be from BNZ and asks you for personal information and you’re not 100% certain it’s us, just tell the caller you’ll ring back on our 0800 number.
If you don’t trust the caller, don’t be afraid to hang up and call us on 0800 ASK BNZ (275 269) or + 64 4 924 0499 to verify what the telephone call was about. If BNZ tells you that no one called you, you can be sure that it was a scam.
Some more tips to remember:
- Never give anyone remote access to your computer if they’ve contacted you out of the blue; whether via email, a pop-up window online or by telephone, even if they claim to be from a reputable company.
- Ask the caller for their name, contact details and position within the organisation they’re ‘allegedly’ calling from and advise them you’ll call them back. Then hang up immediately. If the caller tries to stop you from doing this, you can be sure it’s a scam.
- Never send money or give your bank account or card details, or any other personal information, to anyone you don’t know or trust. Keep your personal details to yourself.
- If you get an unexpected call from someone asking you for your personal information or banking details, it will be a scam.
If you’re suspicious of a phone call you’ve received, or you are concerned that you may have been taken in by a scam, please contact BNZ immediately on 0800 ASK BNZ (275 269) or + 64 4 924 0499.
